The United States of Autism
An 11,000-mile journey across America, built around the lives and voices of families affected by autism.
A FILM BY RICHARD EVERTSA country, seen through families
The United States of Autism follows Richard on a journey across America to listen to families affected by autism. Over 40 days and 11,000 miles, the film brings different communities and experiences into a shared portrait.
The project grew from a personal search into a feature-length documentary. Rather than treating autism as a single story, it makes room for the varied lives of the people Richard meets.
Making the film
Richard directed, produced, and edited the documentary and appears in the film. Sugey Cruz-Everts co-produced the project. The distributor's account records support through the Pepsi Refresh Project and connects the film to the Tommy Foundation's advocacy work.
AFI records the film's 2013 theatrical release, including its New York opening on August 9. The complete catalog entry provides the production credits and release record.
